When my car is in gear, it runs extremely rough...same as when it's idoling and in reverse. Neutral seems to be the only time it runs smooth. Everyone seems to have a different solution...I personally think it's the motor mounts...but I wanted to see if there were any ideas before I start replacing stuff or go broke with mechanics.

If you suspect your mount ,you could visually look for cracks if not run the car step hard on the brakes put it in drive or first gear then ,step on the gas pedal for a short time while some body is looking at your engine ,if there is a big jump in youre engine [drive and reverse mode] then youre sure its the mount..Other cause might be a vacuum leak ,this is only true on low idle speed it should not affect it on high speed .other test is to pull youre spark plug wire when on drive one by one [ note;; high voltage might shock you but will not kill you unless you have hearth problem, also make sure no combustible material around] then observe the changes on youre engine, no change on shaking means thats a bad non contributing cylinder .if all cyl, react to it . then go to another test ,,,does youre engine light [ the small yellow light on the dash ] is on when running? Have it tested if its on..before you do any test ,,,,

Most likely the coil pack(s).I just worked on one with the same problem.Usually the "check engine" light will come on if this is the cause, but not always.Just so you know, the fuel filter is part of the internal pump assembly on this model most times. But I would check for vacuum leaks as another answer suggested. The most telltale sign is raised idle speed on a fuel injected car such as yours if that's the case. The problem with the coil packs is in the design, the spark rides down the plug to the plug body (the metal part).Do the other checks for the motor mounts, and if they are inconclusive, take the spark plugs out underneath the COP (coil over plug) and wrap the ceramic with electrical tape.If the problem lightens or stops, you have your answer.

Cars don't run "rough" because of motor mounts. running rough usually has something to do with vacuum leaks, bad plugs, wires, or ignition distribution (timing, modules, etc.)

Does the engine smooth out while driving normally? If only at idle it runs rough in gear, it may just be a broken vacuum hose...

motor mounts real simple test open the hood and look at the engine when its running even place a hand on top of it make sure its cool though and then have a friend shift it into reverse(so you dont get smashed better a hand then your body) if the engine moves a whole lot (front to back) then probaly motor mounts
