Here is the correct way to run scandisk, it's actually checkdisk in newer versions of windows.
1. Click Start > Run...
2. Type chkdsk then press enter.

Actually mrresearchman suggested wrong to you. In order to "repair" the disk you need to type: chkdsk /r
That's if any problems were found :)

In Windows98:
Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
Run a Disk Cleanup, scandisk, and defrag
In WindowsXP:
Open My Computer
right-click on c:
cl Properties
cl Tools
Run an Error Check, defrag, etc.
Suggest you run all in Safe Mode otherwise programs running in the background will interfere.

*IF* you just type chkdsk as "Save A Horse" suggest it only CHECKS for errors on your drive. it does NOT FIX any it may find!
You have to add /f to "tell" chkdsk to FIX any errors it finds
So you need to type
chkdsk /f (NOTE the SPACE between the k and the /
