I always assumed that blue collar implied a job more similar to a trade, like mechanics, plumbers, electricians, etc. The "blue collar" literally represents the color of the blue jumpsuit people in these professions often wear, (like Mario from Nintendo, who's a plumber...and I make that reference with full respect to all people who are blue collar workers). On the other hand, white collar workers are more than likely people who work in an office type environment, and wear, (you guessed it), shirts and ties to work, often white shirts, which is where the phrase white collar comes from. Personally, neither (blue or white collar) is better than the other, as both have very high, (and very low) paying jobs, with equal advantages and disadvantages.
