Might be because you hear it loud in your head when it's not loud at all. Try singing at a window. The reflected sound will be closer to the true volume. Oh, make sure the window's closed.

the best choice would be to take voice lessons.
you could also practice diction. this website has some good diction exercises. the goal is to pronounce each syllable completely and distinctly in as natural of a voice as you can.

almost every professional newscaster, television host, and actor has been through some level of diction training. while these aren't specifically designed for singers, knowing how to properly pronounce the words you're singing should help you to not sound like you're mumbling. bear in mind, however, that there are specific pronunciation techniques for singers, and the only effective way to learn these is through vocal training.

Being unsure of yourself, or your ability to deliver the song, can cause you to mumble. Also not being sure of the song can do it. I suggest what we were told to do. Sing your song in the shower. I mean really cut loose. That way you can know that you know the song, and you can be more confident of the song you are going to sing.

Lift your eyebrows high, and make your face have energy. If your body language is energetic, then your voice will sound energetic. Also, think about the words you are singing and really believe in them. That will help your words to have life.

Take vocal lessons. You need to sing from the bottom of your lungs, and you need to really FEEL the song.

dont be so self conscious and maybe look into a better recorder if you dont realy "feel" a song then you better work on some acting to make it seem like your words have life
