I wanna' help you write your song,
But I'm tired from my day.
Not knowing you, I might be wrong,
And then what could I say?
If we could sit and talk and think,
Your chances might be good
That I could give the help you need
But I can't, so knock on wood.
Like that?
Or you can do some parodies
Like our friend Yankovick.
But folks will call you 'lazy',
Or worse yet, say 'you're sick'.
As a place to first begin,
The parody's for me.
I just have to substutute
The previous words, you see?
Better stop me . . .

Getting the idea down, whatever it is, without any judgement to it's quality can be a good start, cause putting it down doesn't make it set in stone, it just gets you closer to the next stage in development.
In many ways, it's not what you say, but "how" you say it. How many songs have hit the charts with the subject matter being as shallow as driving down the road, or sitting and drinking a beer? How many of those song's lyrics would be worth 2 cents with the music stripped away?
Write down, or just think about what you want to say, without being critical of the content or quality of it. See if you can then imagine on what kind of context, situation, or event could bring that thought to people in a way they can relate to. In some cases it could be as simple as changing some words around, and a thesaurus can be quite helpful, too :)
"Listening" to the successful works of others is a good place to learn and get ideas. Analyze their technics. None of them achieved the status they reached by pounding out perfect lyrics in every sitting. Most only get one gem out of every 10 to 20.
The main thing is to work at it. Sure you're going to pitch out a lot of ideas, or paper, but your skill will grow with every little bit of effort. Practice on your friends, like the one you mentioned. It's hard for anyone, skilled or not to help stear a ship when it's not moving.
Start a song "scrapbook." Maybe some of those seemingly worthless ideas now could be revitalized with new wordings, experiences, technics that you learn later on, or just extending them with newer ideas to make them into something completely different then what they started out to be, and therefore more satisfying.
Get the ideas out and allow room for feedback from others. Don't get too fixed on you thinking you're right every time. I've seen it hinder people from getting where they wanted to be. Impressing yourself isn't always a default to impressing others.
ha! "katydint's" creative little poem could be made into the next song to hit the charts. Pretty cool.

A lot of songs are writen in the wee small hours of the morning . How many songs start out Its3am or its 4am. Insperation for me seems to come from the delerium caused by lack of sleep, ya know like when you are too tired to sleep and your mind is raceing...Give it a try.

How are you suppose to write a song if you are not writing what you are feeling? If you don't write what you feel then you can't write a song. You can not push yourself to write a song, don't "try" to write one. Ideas and melodies will just come naturally.
