Hey another one of those questions where my useless knowledge comes in handy. Just yesterday a local radio station that I listen to every morning had an author on. He wrote a book called Rock Formations and that;s what it's about. It's loaded with tons of bands and how they came up with their name. Like Nickelback derived from one of the band members working at a Starbucks and the customers always asking fro their change, lol. Either way here's a link to where you can get the book. I was actually thinking about buying it since I didn't win one from the show, and it's not badly priced even, here's a link to help you out...

Led Zeppelin's name comes from John Entwistle and Keith Moon of the band The Who. When Jimmy wanted to start a supergroup with Entwistle, Moon, and Jeff Beck; Moon and Entwistle said that it would go down like a Lead Zeppelin. Jimmy later dropped the "a" from Lead Zeppelin so people would pronounce the name right.

I wish I could be more help on this one. I heard somewhere that the singer for Nickelback worked at a Starbucks, and he was always saying "Here's you Nickel Back." when he gave out change and thats where the name comes from. I know that sounds stupid, and there is probably more to it than that. But I can only vaguely remember the story. I hope you find out more from somebody else.

Steely Dan: One day I read "Naked Lunch" by William Burroughs and found out where their name came from. It refers to a steam-powered "massage" device, shaped a bit like the Washington Memorial I imagine.
I guess you just have to read some "far out" materials and one late night it will present itself before you.
