On the connection end of your hard drive, there are small plastic jumpers that can be set for Master, Slave or Cable Select. If you connect only one hard drive to an IDE controller, it is the master. If you connect hard drives to that same cable, you have to set one as master and one as slave. Usually the hard drive has a label that tells you how to arrange the jumpers to set the hard drive properly. Good luck.

You just move the white plastic jumpers on the back of the hard drive, set them to Primary and Secondary or if your computer supports Cable Select then put them on that...the settings should be on top of the hard drive or the instructions that came with the hard drive....

The jumpers should already be on the drive, and there should be a legend on the drive indicating what to jump for master or slave. First drive should be master, second is slave.

Set it to either cable select or set the one with your OS on to master and the second to slave . If your conecting it to the second connector on the cable then just set it to cable select, If is a SATA drive set it to slave.
