They had to change it's number because 666 is the devils number, and all of the **** that went down there.

Actually what it is is a spur off of Rt66 . It ran from NM into Shiprock NM. The rock of Shiprock is actually the very hard core of the inside of an ancient volcano. The softer rock eroded and the harder plug is all that remains.
Rt 666 is known as one of the most dangerous roads in New Mexico the reason is that Native Americans will drive into Gallup - because alcohol on the Navajo Reservation is illegal-
get drunk and attempt to drive home on this very empty, very fast , very straight 100 mile two lane road.
Two vehicles coming at each other at 80 mph have closing speed of 160 mph and with only a hospital at each end it can take a while for help to arrive.
The Rt 666 number has since been changed to US 491 but the road is still deadly.

Route 666 ran north to south in the northwestern quad of New Mexico. The state changed the Route number about three years ago. It was nowhere near I-10 or I-25.

Yes, it ran north/south in New Mexico, on the west side of the state. It ran through Gallup, and intersected with I-10. I just know about it because I drove it to Shiprock, NM. Shiprock is this giant rock in the desert where the Native Americans said some giant bird came down from the sky and became this rock, it's a totally freaky place, and I had to see it.
That road was scary to drive, just because it's one of the most dangerous roads in the state, not because I was all superstitious about the name. Big deal, Highway 666.
It's not the same road as Route 66, that ran east/west, totally different road.
