What is the recommended water/coolant mix for both winter driving and summer driving? Should I always mix my coolant with water, even in the winter and summer?

Here is the most cost-effective way of doing this:

- Buy the First bottle 50/50 stuff, already pre-mixed.
- When this is used up, KEEP the bottle!!!
- Now, and from here on out, always buy 100% antifreeze (it's cheaper).
- Then, pour 1/2 the antifreeze into the 50/50 bottle and pour until both containers are 1/2 full.
- Fill the rest of both containers up with water and viola: two containers of 50/50 all automagically mixed.
- Label them with a magic marker (I write 50/50 on them).
- And, never forget to always keep at least one empty gallon container around for this method.

I wouldn't use any other gallon container, I dislike having antifreeze in anything that isn't so labeled.

Using just water can cause serious corrosion QUICKLY! Coolant has additives to prevent corrosion, overheating, and freezing. There are some additives out there that might be a relatively inexpensive (about the price of 2-3 gallons of coolant) fix to a blown head gasket. They don't always work but given your situation it might be worth a shot. Check with your local parts store, follow the directions carefully (usually involves a couple of drains and fills) this might buy you some time.

For most driving conditions,,a 50/50 mix is sufficient,,,and yes,,you should always try and use antifreeze coolant mix even in summer,,or for topping up.
But small amounts of plain water wont hurt it none,in the short term.

Actually, unless you live in freezing temperatures, you can get away with 100% water and your car will run cooler thus helping performance. I run like a 90% water, 10% coolant mix and it works well.

Always use a 50/50 mix antifreeze, unless you live in Alaska, or above the arctic circle. Never use just water, except in an emergency.

If you are having to add coolant, you have a problem. Under normal conditions you should not loose coolant.. You can add just coolant if it is just once and a while..but you must match it to what is in there from the factory.. Old fashion green .. or newer Ford , GM , ect special coolants..do not mix with the older green.
