Since I have been pregnant, I am highly intolerant of anything high in sugar. When I do drink or eat anything (from juice to soda to even sweetened water) sugary I have morning sickness right away. Is there anything the doctor can give you to prevent this problem?

I don't get morning sickness generally. Things high in sugar is the only thing that makes me sick. I have always had a high intolerance to sugar even before pregnant, but pregnancy has just made it worse. Drs haven't figured out why though.

There are different ways to check for gestational diabetes. Trust me, I know since I have it and have had to go for numerous tests. One way was to drink a stale 7-UP-like drink, wait an hour, get my blood taken. Second way was to eat a candy bar of my choice and a soft drink of my choice, wait an hour, get my blood taken. Third way was to have my blood taken, eat breakfast, wait two hours, get my blood taken. The third way takes the longest, but for you, it sounds like your best bet. Talk it over with your doctor and explain to him about your morning sickness. He should offer you this option. And I hope you don't have it. It sucks! If you do, you can e-mail me, and I'll give you more details, such as diet and all. Congrats and good luck!

Generally they don't give this test until you are late in your 2nd trimester. So, maybe by then you'll not be dealing with so much morning sickness. They allowed me to have water. So, get it down and then sit back and relax. Do deep breathing. Sip your water. Mind over matter. I was over my morning sickness by the time I had to test but it still made me feel like i might vomit. So, I just relaxed and did my deep breaths and told myself I would not get sick.

Good luck!

I asked that when I had to take the 3 hours sugar test and they told me nope, deal with it, all women do. Just drink it a bit slower than normal. You have to do it within their set amount of time, just take smaller sips. I puked it up in the third hour and they made me do it all over again. So I tried the little sips and it worked better and stayed down. Good luck, I know it sucks, but unfortunately, it's a standard test.

Believe it or not, I didn't think the sugary mixture was that bad. It's like soda pop without the fizz, or cough syrup, but I held my nose and chugged it to minimize the taste.

I think my doctor's office said they have had people that have thrown it up, but if you throw it up you have to start the test all over again. Try to control that gag reflex if you can. If it makes you sick the first time, the next time won't be pleasant either.

Yup, there are two "tranquilizer" type drugs they can give you...one is a form of Xanax that relaxes your stomach muscles and is safe for the baby...the other I am not too familiar with. We give these to mothers who have extreme dehydration from severe morning sickness, and they work...but they make you sleepy...I am an obgyn nurse, and unfortunately they don't ALWAYS work...but most of the time they do.

Good luck

I've heard of people fasting before the test and I had to do that with my 3 hour glucose test but not with the one hour ones. I ate toast before I went in and still threw up. but they never have offered me anything for it.

ginger is an all natural cure for nausea. you can also take unisom but of course it makes you sleepy so maybe only take half of one. if you still need something stronger than that, they could give you fennigren but i doubt they would give you something that strong.

ask if they can get it cold for you. Mine wasn't so bad, and I hate sugary soda. It really helps if it is cold!
