three friends of mine from Europe and myself are planning a trip to the south of the US this May. Of course, we want to spend as little money as possible - especially on motels/hotels. Are chains like motel6 etc. the cheapest way to go? Are these places often overbooked or is it ok to go there without making a reservation in advance? How much is a cheap room for four? Thanks! (I welcome any other advice concerning our travel plans!)

We have done a long tour across the United States by car.
We used Motel 6 for about 90% of the trip.
They have thousands of locations, several in some of the bigger cities.
Motel 6 is often (handily) located next to a family restaurant (Denny's quite often).
They are well maintained, serviced daily and clean.
The cost is reasonable, however the rates vary from city to city.
At your first check-in, pick up their complimentary booklet.
All locations, addresses, maps etc are listed state by state.

Generally, you will not have to book ahead, we got caught only
once (Florida on New Years Eve - what was I thinking).
But it is only a matter of a free call to reserve your rooms.

Have a look around their site and see what you think:

If you want to do a comparison this is Super 8's site:
