A SSID is basically the name given to your wireless router/access point.

When you broadcast your SSID so computers can find and connect to your router/access point it is called active scanning. When you disable the SSID it is called pasive scanning. This will not make your wireless network more secure as many people think, and can interfere with your own wireless connections.

SSID - Name of network
Active scanning - Can be seen by host
Passive scanning - Can not be seen

You should be a little more specific on what type of scanning you're talking about.
