well i let them be rude. I talk back very sweetly and try to by sympathetic to their needs. After I'm done trying i offer to get my manager to see if that would help and 9 times out of 10 that works. Then i go to my fellow servers and tell them about the customer, we then laugh and make fun of the person so it does not get to us.

I've had my fair share of these. I usually try to read the customer and see if I can adjust my services to their needs. Sometimes the ruder they are, the more formal/reserved/professional I try to be; were as with a laid back table I might joke around/smile/ be somewhat flirtatious/friendly. If there is something I can't fix or a circumstance beyond my control I offer to get the manager. Usually, I just get them what they need and then stay out of their way. People like that usually like to be left alone. I also talk about them to my co-workers; mean I know, but sometimes you just have to let out steam. There are some people you will never please, regardless of how good the service and food was. They want you to do back flips for them.

i also agree with killing them with kindness when you do interact with them. Sometimes I wonder if people are asking for trouble, so they have something to complain about and then they get a free meal. People are weird like that.

As a former wait/host person, I would have to say that it really depends on the individual situation. If a customer is being verbally abusive, then you should contact the store manager and report them. Nobody should have to put up with abuse be it phsyical or verbal.

You just deal with it and know that it will be over with in under an hour. If they are way out of line, then you get a manager to deal with them. Talking back and mouthing off can get you fired. They aren't worth it.

It's hard to do but when I cocktail waitressed I use to kill em with kindness. Usually they would feel bad by the end of the service and give me a better tip. Like I said though - its hard to do when you want to clock them over the head with your tray.

I just always plastered a smile on my face and dealt with them very calmly while inside seething. It's the kill 'em with kindness thing. Then I'd go into the kitchen and the air would turn blue with cuss words.
