It is the name for a strategy of handling too many things to do -- it comes from the military I believe. Specifically, it originates from times when there are many wounded soldiers and not enough doctors so the doctors only help the ones with a chance to live.

Can anyone help? :D

Triage - it's "a system used by medical or emergency personnel to ration limited medical resources when the number of injured needing care exceeds the resources available to perform care so as to treat those patients in most need of treatment who are able to benefit first."

It's also used in emergency rooms and urgent care clinics to assess patients in order treat the ones with the most critical illnesses first, and is usually done by a "triage nurse."

One small thing... to triage is to decern specifics and severity of symptoms or injury to separate into groups( most critical cases to be treated first... i.e. profuse bleeding v.s. someone with a runny nose) and not to have, as you said, "doctors only help the ones with a chance to survive". We are triaged every time we go into an emergency room.
I work in an animal hospital and the front office staff is in charge of triage duties to better serve the patients in the most dire need of attention first without excluding treatment for the other patients. This action also gives the doctor much needed information quickly, saving valuable time. This is what is meant in television hospital dramas when a doctor says, "Give me the bullet.". They are asking for a brief synopsis of the case that may be given orally while the examination is underway or may written into the file/chart to be read prior to the exam.
Hope that helps

I agree with blue julie. If you've ever seen "Grey's Anatomy" you might have seen the episode where the interns have to practice helping the most seriously injured patients first.
