how do i change the apperance of my monitor screen?

My monitor suddenly when from a regular looking screen to a screen that is magnified and i don't know how to change it back? the screen now has the scroll bars on the side and also on the bottom.

Have you looked at the desktop resolution? Right-click desktop->Properties->Settings tab. Change to 800x600, 1024x768, or whatever you're comfortable with.
