I prefer a Widows OS, and have $1200 bugeted for the purpose. My needs are fairly simple, I am not into gaming. I use my computer for email, research, photo editing, and I'd like to be able to download music.

I want a reliable unit with a warranty and decent tech support. What are your recommendations?

Dell

First, check and see if your work or school has a discount plan with Dell, Gateway, etc.. It may not be much, but anything is better than nothing.

Second, don't be fooled by speed. Just because it says 2.5Ghz, doesn't really mean much anymore. It's not just about Processor speed. High speed CPUs without a high speed bus (circuit board pathways) is like having a Ferrari in a school zone: Pointless.

Go Centrino, they come with integrated Wi-Fi and have better battery life while still offering killer speeds.

As for companies, go with the best price and warranty. Throw a rock in any direction and you'll hit three differing opinions of the same company. Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq... They all use nearly identical components.

As for Windows, unless you're getting Vista Home Premium or better, stick with XP. Don't waste your time with Vista Basic.
