they will eat algae, but they need a lot of other food to survive.
put one of these in the tank twice a week, leave in for a day or two, snails like variety too:
carrot (slice)
cucumber (slice)
zuchinni (slice)
green leafy vegetables
you may also want to get some liquid calcium (it's for marine aquariums, but there's nothing in it that will hurt freshwater aquariums). it helps keep their shells from becoming weak and disintegrating.

I have mystery snails, almost the same as apple snails. They live off algae that grows in the tank, if you don't have algae yet, you can feed them tropical fish flakes or just rubber band some lettuce to a big piece of gravel or somewhere in the aquarium.

Well if they really are apple snails they will be good algae eaters. Other virtually identical looking species may prefer fish flakes to algae in large tank, or when you are over feeding. Will tend not to eat algae. Generally unless your snails have completely cleaned the tank of algae they are getting enough food.
They will eat algae waffers, zucchini, sliced broccoli stems, sinking (meaty) pellets...

They do eat algae, but in most cases, the algae does not grow fast enough to sustain them...I recommend getting algae disks from a pet store and feed them every couple of days. This way they are not going to starve, but will still be hungry to help keep your tank clean.

Apple snails don't eat just algae. They are kind of like the opossums of the tank world. They eat anything, including small animals that get in their way. I once witnessed an apple snail eat a live shrimp that it cornered. It didn't do anything to kill the shrimp except start munching it.

Apple snails are not good algae eaters, in fact, in 5 years of keeping them, mine do not eat algae at all. So they do need to be fed. Feed them algae wafers and fresh veggies like lettuce and cucumber. Even if they do eat algae, they still need to be fed.

hi! Apple snails can devour fish flakes, lettuce, stay plant life, or carrots. additionally, i think of small feeding cuttlefish bones will make it fairly is shell extra beneficial and much less fragile. Cuttlefish bones will provide the snail some calcium. wish this helped.

They're more than happy with the algae in your tank, especially if you have a couple of fish in there as well to make more mess.
