GOOD:
You don't risk "overflow" leaks like you do with pads.
You don't feel like you are wearing a "wet diaper" like you do with pads.
You can move (exercise, sports, swimming) w/out risking protection--like when a pad shifts...
They are more comfortable & cleaner feeling than a pad.
You can wear a pad w/a tampon if you have very heavy flow... (I used to "overflow" a pad during one 43 minute class in HS, until I found out about tampons--then I wore a light pad & a tampon, and didn't have any problems w/leaks during classes)
And another thing about comfort--you shouldn't feel the tampon if it is inserted properly--you almost feel as if you arent having your period! (A "bonus" as far as I am concerned!)

BAD:
Can be uncomfortable inserting the first few times if you have never used them before--mainly because you tense up. Relax, and follow the instructions in the box--they usually have a pretty good "diagram" to explain it!
The "mini" tampons w/no applicator (like "OB") can be rather gross to try to insert, and I have found that since they are shorter in length, they tend to allow leaks that regular tampons do not. (I found out the hard way at camp one summer...I got up from my seat & saw a red spot on the chair! OOPS!)

UGLY:
I have to agree--the "ugly" part is when they are removed! LOL

My favorite brand? Tampax. (I use the regular cardboard applicator, but I'm used to them--they didn't have the plastic applicators when I first started using them... OMG! I think I just "dated" myself! lol) Also, Tampax makes a "Slender Regular" that had an applicaotr that is a bit "skinnier"--this might be easier to use for a "first-timer."

As for TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome)...it's not as common as it used to be, since the "super absorbent" materials that were used in them in the 80's (when TSS was a BIG fear and A LOT more common) are no longer used. But you don't want to use a "Super" absorbancy if your flow is "Light." Ck out the Tampax "combo" boxes if you need different absorbancies during...they have 2 or 3 different absorbancies so you have a variety to choose from. :)

A good thing is, they stop that wet feeling. When you wear pads sometimes you can feel a bit paranoid about leaking and you can feel quite wet-sorry to be so graphic. With tampons you feel much more comfortable. A bad thing is that if you don't get the absorbancy right for you, they can leak if your flow is too heavy for the size of tampon, or if you use too big a size the tampon won't be soaked through and it can be a bit uncomfortable removing them. This is also dangerous as you can sometimes get an infection from using tampons designed for heavier bleeding when your flow is lighter. I would recommend the ones with applicators when you first use them, much easier to use. Tampax compak are very good, the plastic applicators are much smoother than the cardboard ones in other types.

Good - They're easy to hide. When you're in school, you can easily slip one of the portable ones (Playtex, Tampax) into your hand and run to the bathroom without anyone knowing. Also, you don't have the baggy diaper feeling that pads give you.

Bad - As soon as you get over the feeling that you're sticking something into yourself, there wont be a bad thing. Aside from TSS, but as long as you don't wear them for more than 8 hrs, you're ok.

Ugly - Don't try to put 2 up there at once, like if you forget. Happened to my college roommate... she ended up with horrible pains and many jokes aimed at her. Also, don't freak out if you can't find the string. It didn't disappear, keep looking.

I'm a big fan of Playtex b/c they have the plastic applicators. Tampax Portables are good, as are Kotex, even though theyre cheaper. Tampax Pearls, overrated. I don't go with the discount brands b/c I don't want anything generic anywhere near there.

Alrighty!
just last year i started using tampons and here is what i know.
a GOOD thing is when you play sports a tampon is MUCH more comfortable then a pad and deffently not as messy.
a BAD thing is that it took me awhile before i could get the hang of using one. at first it kinda hurts but you really have to just relax and just insert it. if you are tense while trying to put in a tampon, it's not easy and doesn't go in nicely. but now that im used to it, its completly easy.
an UGLY thing, is they arent that pretty looking when they come out..lol

i prefer tampax pearls, the good thing about them is it is so much more comfortable than a pad and i trust tampons better than i do a pad cause i know where the tampon is and its doing its job, the bad thing is.....um...i dont know of any bad things except the toxic shock thing, and the ugly, well its not really pretty when it comes out.

Some of the goods things are that they are a lot better than a pad. You can't feel them once they are in place and it is alot cleaner. I honestly can't think of any bad things about them. I like the tampx pearl, they work the best for me.

well, you might forget to switch it. that happened to me once. my friend was wearing a tampon and she planned on switching it during class but the teacher wouldn't let her go. she sat there for an hour and a half extra and when she got up there was a huge red stain on her jeans. NOT pretty. this happens less often with pads because they hold more blood.
