Perhaps, but not in any nice neighborhoods.

"Southern California" means many things, from Beverly Hills, to Watts or Compton (basically slums, where you're likely to be shot). S. Cal is HUGE. I mean, it takes 2-3 hours on the freeway to get across it. It's a gigantic area. You need to be more specific.

Still, the amazing thing is, bad neighborhoods aren't THAT much cheaper than nice ones (excluding mansions, etc.).
It's still expensive to buy even in bad neighborhoods there.
The best thing to do, would be to spend a week there, driving around, mapping out places you may like, or not like.
Look up statistics on the 'net first, so you can eliminate places that are truly terrible.
Here', I'll name a few:
Watts, Compton, much of Long Beach, Wilmington, Carson, Van Nuys is iffy, some parts of North Hollywood, Wittier, Southgate, Riverside, San Bernadino.
This is just scratching the surface. There are MANY more bad places to live in S. Calif... I've lived in some of them myself!

Single and no debt? Perhaps? But, that would probably be a tall order if you want to live in a nice neighborhood. I used to pay over $1500/ month rent for a studio in Sherman Oaks.
