I just got guppies and noticed they lie at the bottom of the tank sometimes. I thought they were dead but they get up and swim around. Are they sleeping? Or are they dying? :(

they may be still adjusting to new water or they are just resting from the experience of being introduced to their new home, otherwise i would have to say yes but not always.

How Do Guppies Sleep

Yah, guppies do slp at the bottom of the tank.. That's why you don't keep shrimp/prawn/crayfishes with the guppies as they are usually night-walkers and will attack your sleeping beauties.
Enjoy!

This may or may not be normal behavior. Check your water quality. Your parameters should read ammonia-0, nitrites-0, and nitrates-20 or less. If your water does not test out like this, you have a problem. Do frequent partial water changes to improve the water quality.
