There is no such thing as a 'modern right".

A right is something that is "God Given". If you read your Locke, Madison, and Hobbes (though mostly Locke) you see that Rights are things that Humans are entitled to because of the fact they are Humans... beings created in the image and likeness of God.

People who aren't well read or educated often confuse rights with government entitlements. You do NOT "get your rights from the government". You might fight the government to get them to recognize that you have a particular right, but the government does not grant you rights. You get your rights from who you are.

That is why the Declaration of Independece is so important. It is people delcaring that they get their rights from God. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...". That is why the US Constitution is so important in history. Prior to the Constitution you had the English Magna Carta where the King granted certian rights to his barons. In the Constitution (based upon the books of Hobbes and Locke) you have the People (We the People) coming together to form a government. The People (who already have all the rights) come together to form a government, and voluntarily agree to give up some of THEIR rights and powers to the government... NOT the other way around.

Your rights may not always be recognized or respected, but you still have the right none the less. You have the right to free speech, and even if the government tosses you into jail for saying it, you can still say it. (It just gets harder to exercise that right... but you still have that right.) Sometimes rights are violated, but that doesn't mean you stop having the right. An aborted baby has a right to life, but that right has been violated. A slave has a right to be free, but that right has been violated. A woman in Saudi Arabia has a right to decide who she marries, but that right is often violated.

You are born free. One side of this freedom is the fact that the world does not owe you anything. You aren't entitled to free education, medicine, and support checks just because you suck air. You are entitled to one thing though... your freedom. Your freedom to defend yourself, to be safe from the government hassling you, to be safe from other people hassling you, to be able to speak your mind and follow your conscience.

So whoever is teling you that there are "modern civil rights" has it all backwards. They are thinking of things the government gives people. Rights are not things the government gives to you (that's why there is no right to health care or housing or a job or social security or education.... those are BENEFITS). Rights are things YOU are BORN WITH. Regardless of when, where, who or how you were born. They are part of being human.
