To save the files you want to keep, just burn them onto Cd's.
If your OS installation disk is Windows XP, just follow the instructions when it asks you what size of your disk you want to
partition. If your OS disk doesn't give you any options and just wants to take up your whole Drive "C", you need to partition your
hard drive first with a 3rd party program. Then your stingy OS disk will think it's using your whole drive, but it only gets whatever you gave it. Don't worry, it will fit! After you reinstall your system, you need to learn to use it (the system) to create, format, and use another partition to store your files. There are many good books on the subject, if you want to do it yourself.

The best deal for you is to re size the partition so you won't lose data. use software called partition magic and re size the partition shrink it to half the size then create a new partition on the UN allocated space and format it then copy every thing to the new partition after that format the first partition and install windows then copy your files to the new installed windows.
Note: if you want to install windows you have to reinstall all the programs one by one because they won't work only your files you typed or photos or music will be saved this way.
Good luck .

If your OS is windows XP, go to control panel. Click icon view. Go to the administrative tools folder. Go into computer mnagement. Go to Disk management. There you can right click on the picture of your hard drive and edit partitions. If you onlyu have 1 you can't do this becouse Your OS can't work while being deleted. Restart your computer with the installation disk in the drive and when it asks you for partitions delete your old one and cerate a new one from there, on the blue screen.
