I believe it was a propaganda move on the U.S. government's part to instill confidence in the American people that we were winning the Cold War. We had the Hollywood props to pull it off, and it happened at a time when television journalism was viewed so "sacred." People were extremely trusting and gullible of whatever the American News media told them. It was a perfect ploy to create unity and patriotism at the time.. Do I believe that man has gone to the moon? I believe so, many times. I just don't believe it happened then, at that moment with these patriotic figures/personalities fathomed by the U.S. government.
I think it was brilliant. Some day, the truth will be exposed, and the public will look back upon it, laugh, and say, "That cold war thing, was so silly."

Lots of elderly people believed that we never actually went to the moon at all. They thought it was staged in a desert here in the US. I was younger and thought it very incredible. I STILL DO.
