In general class is not defined only by income but by occupation, education, and in many places by birth. However when people say economic class, they usually mean income, but even then describing a low paid college professor as working class seems wrong.

slightly condescending in your opinion on what other people "need to do", but ok. the middle class you're so dismissive in reference to is not a statistical definition, its a sociological one, just to verify. that's probably the beginning of your frustration, but alas. your proposal is a little india-esque, and because i'm coming from a political science and sociological perspective, i'm hesitant in encouraging more disenfranchisement into an already volatile societal setting, and yes, i DO understand what you're talking about statistics wise. india patriated in 1948 and still has difficulty emancipating the disrimination from the class system that was criminalized at that time and is still evident today. i agree that there's a huge discrepancy in defining what the "middle class" actually is, and i see why you would want to clarify that. however, i think that to go to the extent of actually passing a law to categorize income classes is excessive and alienating just for you to not be "bugged" by common political discourse. so, in conclusion, get over yourself.

everything is relative.
I consider myself middle class
I assume most people do.
I have a house and a job and numerous things that come with a secure income.
I considered myself middle class when my wife and I were first married and I had a lot less then(37years ago)
I think it is something like old age. Old is twenty years older than whatever one is.

social class category is defined in relative term. Because there are millionaires who have assests without much money in bank; there are workers with job to increase their money. There are powerful and famous without much property.
