I have an 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva and my alternator is bad. My car drives for about 45 minutes and then dies. It takes about 2 minutes for it to start back up. A friend said I need a new alternator but what can I do now to keep it from cutting off until I get a new alternator? Thanks in advance

This does not sound like a alternator problem to me. You have a problem that will have to be diagnosed by a mechanic with the car in his possession so that he can immediately start checking trouble points as soon as this problem you describe occurs. As complicated as cars are today with all the ECM sensors that are installed, it may have trouble codes stored in the ECM that may point to a possible cause and would have to be plugged into a code scanner to retreive them.

It's most likely not an alternator. If alt. is bad, car would run only until battery ran out of juice, then it would not crank over once it died, let alone start. Sounds more like something electrical getting hot, killing motor, quickly cooling down and allowing restart.

A way to check and make sure that it's your alternator that's bad, Is to have your car running, disconnect your + cable from your battery. Now, if your car shuts off when you disconnect the cable, you do need an alternator, But if your car stays running then your alternator is still good.

Alternators can play up and in simple terms is going a thanks to make sure is get a guide and hook up the VOLT METER to grant you an theory of what's occurring. The volt meter helps you to make sure how a lot modern-day is interior the alternator and how a lot modern-day is given out to the battery.

All you can do is try not to run anything that will drain electricity (radio, lights, a/c). You can't get far with electronic fuel injection (as opposed to mechanical pump).

Also check all your belts and make sure they are intact.

First buy a new battery if yours is 5 years old. Have your battery load tested if it's less than 5 years old.
