seams and nauseous are the correct words..

Because we are given a lot of choices and most people have to keep up with others or out do them, because they see it or were taught to be that way. Besides who wants to live like their parents did/do ??? Parents try and make sure their kids have MORE so MORE is encouraged.

You are so right! society is totally materialistic now and it is just getting worse, people are dying to get stupid video game systems and everyone thinks that stuff will somehow fill voids in their lives! Stuff does'nt make people happy, it is our relationships and experiences that enrich our lives! When you buy something, you may enjoy it for a couple hours, but usually the excitement of it is overwith within minutes, and quite often forgotten! Stuff is merely a way to fill your life up with junk we do not need or really want! Most of the things we truly love and enjoy can't be bought, but are through loving people and times we share with them! All a bigger house does is hold more stuff! A house isn't what is in it, it is the love that lives there!~

It seems that we do live in excess anymore. And, many times people are buying things that they can't even afford. It seems like the American way.

Truthfully, I think each person has a different reason why they fell the need to have so many things. For some, it serves as a status symbol. For some, they get so attached to things that it becomes an obsession. For some, shopping and acquiring things makes them happy / enhances their mood. And, I'm sure there are many more reasons too.

Most people who dont have alot of money dont feel that way, they are happy with the things they have. People who do have alot of money i think forget how to be happy, and keep buying and buying trying to satisfy that need, when it has nothing to do with material things at all.

it's our makeup in the west here. In the east, where Buddhism is more practiced, they teach that attachment to material things is harmful to your spiritual growth so you don't see it like you do here.
