If I am really really tired, I won't answer it unless I know who it is. If my caller ID doesn't identify who it is, they can leave a message. Actually, that is anytime. I do not answer any unidentified callers or any that say toll free. I do not do sales calls. I am on the do not call list, but still get them.
My Dad will either let them talk and set the phone down on the counter and leave the room, or just hang up on them at his house. He doesn't have caller ID. I just don't answer.
If I am indisposed, I will return the call. If I am on the other line, I will return the call of people I know. That is the extent of it.

I spent 22 years in the military, almost all of it on 30 minute recall status. When I retired I conducted an experiment. I found that if you ignored a ringing phone long enough it would fall silent.
Honest, it works every time I've tried it. Now I hardly even hear the damn thing.

I'm a snob and really don't like to be bothered most of the time. I love to keep to myself or sometimes I have my shows on and that's when people want to call me.
