I have my first visit to the gyno tomorrow. Im 15.5 and im going because i have very heavy periods and pain that last for the first 3 days. what will they do to me? what will the exam consist of? are they any medications that could help make my period lighter and the cramps to hurt less. OTC pain pills dont help.

Relax. That is the best thing you can do to help your exam go quickly and smoothly. They will examine your vagina, most likely swab it and send that to the lab. They will ask questions regarding your period and pain. They will most likely give you some sort of prescription pain pills, which I will warn you are powerful,

If you relax your body, it will make it easier for the doctor to insert the device (small metal device that gently opens the vagina), it does not hurt. If you tense, it could pinch a little. The swab does not hurt either.

It is nothing to worry about. Many women have heavy periods and pain. That does not mean something is wrong. Ask questions you may have and if you don't understand something, be sure to ask for clarification.

After the dr. talks to you, you'll probably get a pelvic exam. It's a little awkward the first time, but they're usually really cool at the office and will help you feel comfortable and relaxed. The dr. will want to make sure that there aren't other problems which aren't likely at your age, so don't worry.
Many times, a doctor will prescribe (low-estrogen) birth control pills to help with heavy periods. The periods are lighter and, as a result, the cramping problem is usually reduced.
I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Relax! I was nervous when I went for my first time but I was lucky and I got a female doctor who works with the male GYN. Both are really nice but to answer your questions: 1. They basically check your ovarias and your female parts give you a pap smer which is basically some kind of tool they stick up in your virginal hole that has a lub in it to not make it hard. It hurts a first but after awhile you get used to it but that's all they do. It doesn't matter if your a virgin or not. 2. You should do it as soon as you feel comforable doing it and don't hold off to long. I went for the first time when I was 18 but with the cancers out there it's important that you go as soon as possible to make sure. 3. tell yourself that every woman goes through it and it's just to make sure that you dont' have any cancers. Oh forgot to mention they also check your breast for breast cancer. Try not to be so nervous and remeber that it's normal and your not alone. after the first visit you'll feel better and won't be so nervous anymore. After all you would want to make sure your cancer free right? I hope I've helped some. Just relax and remeber that your not alone ok? I really hope I helped you out. The first time I went I was a virgin so that doesn't matter.

In short, they're going to do pelvic exams, swabbing, and other potentially uncomfortable things. Just relax, and wiggle your toes! Seriously, it worked my first time. Focus on wiggling your toes and it'll take your mind off of it. Most of all, dont be embarassed when you walk in. You should be proud of yourself for being so responsible!
Consider doing situps or pilates or something active when you feel cramps before reaching for the meds. BC pills will regulate your flow, and maybe help with cramps.

its okay to be nervous. just remember your in the hands of a professional. 1st they will just talk to you be very honest it will help them help you then they will prob do a pelvic exam. try to relax it will be less uncomfortable but there should be no pain. also they will do a breast exam. they might do a rectal exam to see if your uterus is tipped which might be causing the pain. they will do test for STD and anything else they can think of. the doc might suggest that you get on birth control that will lighten your periods. i hope this helps i had horrible periods too cold sweats and vomiting crams that killed. a heating pad works wonders. good luck

as for meds that is what your dr will decide...if they decide to do a pap i know they are not pleasant and are quit embarrasing IF YOU LET THEM BE.. thats the phrase to remember its really only embarrasing to you the dr does this all day everyday and he isnt even thinking oh i am looking at this girls ummm.. the doc is just doing there job so relax what i do is look at the celing and count the dots or i close my eyes and think about what to cook for dinner anything to keep your mind off of what the doc is doing what happend during a pap is he will lay you on a table put your feet in stuips and then he will put this cold thing in there that kind of looks like a ducks bill then he will go inside and do a scraping it doesnt hurt at all. then he may or may not lube his fingers and put them inside of you and then press on your overies ect lower part of your stomach.. it really is quit easy and doesnt hurt. but he may not even do that you may just go in and talk but just wanted to prepare you..good luck

You're not alone girl, it's part of being a female...welcome to the Club! You'll probablly get a pap & pelvic, just relax and breath, it'll be over before ya know it.
They may put you on hormones/birth control to regulate your periods. You'll be fine :)
