It's true that Petra put out 24 albums, won 4 grammys, 10 dove awards, and was inducted into the gospel music hall of fame during their 33 year career, but it is not true that they are the greatest rock band of all time. That distinction goes to the Beatles (or Tenacious D if you ask Jack Black).

However if you're going purely by awards and such, take a look at Rush. 9 Juno awards, 4 Grammy nominations, induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (as well as being considered the best Canadian band of all time by many polls), each member has one at least three awards for being outstanding at their particular instrument, but most impressively 13 platinum albums and 8 gold albums. Which leaves them with 1 album and 1 EP that didn't go gold or platinum. All this since they formed in 1968 making them 39 years into their career (30 if you don't count their 9 year 'hiatus') gives them a pretty prolific output as well.

Petra might have these stats but the greatest rock band is selected based on the popularity, the number of hits songs produced, and the size of the fan base. The Beatles are considered to be the best rock band ever because most of the bands that followed developed their music on The Beatles. They have the greatest fanbase, their music is played everywhere and most of us know about their story.

The bands that would closely follow them are: The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Deep Purple and some of the others in mainstream rock; Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in Metal; and Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes and King Crimson in Progessive rock category. Many of these bands haven't won grammies but their music still stands tall.

Petra on the other hand may be considered as the best Gospel Rock band ever, but they derive their music from the bands which came before them and changed their music with time.

People who listen to other forms of music would have listened to The Beatles but only some of us would have listened to Petra, mainly because of their content. But like I always say, if you like something that you listen to, go for it even if the others around you don't like it.
