Persistence and attrition. It is very hard, so try everything and then try everything again. Keep trying everything until something works. This is why I don't want to sell my photography :) Here are some ideas, in order of what I think are the odds of success in making money: 1) events! Use craigslist or some other way of listing, and advertise your services. From what I've seen, the vast majority of actual photography sales is done via events like senior photos, parties, weddings, and such. If you have bad luck at the rates you want, reduce them, even if you have to do a few for free to get a portfolio built up to where you can then charge for them. 2) consignment: goto local art stores, nature stores, antique stores, frame stores... you might be surprised... even set up a booth or something somewhere. 3) micro-stock photography(istock, shutterstock, etc)... check out the web sites for specifics. -if they accept you, this is major money for you! 4) Your own web-site(probably not a good place to start, but also probably where you will end up) 2) selling prints on ebay(good luck)
