Everyone who answered this question obviously misunderstood exactly what its asking. Society provides the normality's which act as "anchors" to keep us functioning properly. Without these "norms" a person wouldn't be able to socialize and conform to society. Once a person becomes detached from the "norms anchoring" them to society, they have nothing to base the meaning of their life course on. The individual will lose all purpose and meaning to their life. Since society provides norms and values, we use them as a measurement to determine the intrinsic value of life.Society provides us with a sense of purpose or understanding of our position in life. Without it we would have nothing to keep us on course and lose direction.Let me know if this helps, it should be more logical than some of the other answers you have received.

I think what "paradox" wrote is essentially true. Emile Durkheims work "Suicide" states there are four different types of sucide.
1. Egoistic-social integration is low and and people have a sense of meaningless among people.
2. Altruistic-social integration and collective consciousness are too strong.
3. Anomic-social instability which results in the breakdown of standards
4. Fatalistic- similar too altruistic except that the strength of integration leads to no way out.
Durkheim stated that sociological facts that are present in society can help determine what factors pushed a person to take his or her own life. All four types of sucide display different factors for commiting suicide.
Most people have too much to live for, like their friends and family social standing in the community etc, to take their lives.

Pleasure. I'm not talking about anything dramatic, merely the simple biochemical pleasure response. We're addicted to it in a sense. We get pleasure from watching TV, surfing the net, daydreaming, interacting with others, stepping out in the sun, eating (even mundane food) and crawling into bed. If I'm chilly and wrap myself in a blanket to be warm, the warmth is pleasure. There are greater pleasures and lesser pleasures, but there's always pleasure. When something goes wrong and we have none, not merely because nothing wonderful is happening or because something dreadful is happening but because we lose the ability to feel it, suicide becomes more likely.

Some of it is the fear of death. People feel like they don't want to lose what they have so they want to keep living. The illusion that we have something worth holding onto or that we have potential to attain something worth holding onto. It is the same reason why people want to be a level seven at answering questions with a good best answers percentage. People have ambitions because they want to prove their worth or achieve things because of a need to feel important

Society as such has very little to do with it. I'd call it a human instinct for self-preservation, and to a lesser extent, religious training. Also, happy people don't WANT to die. And most people are easily amused.
