Is what happened to Meredith Grey in tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy medically possible? Could she have been out for so long without any repercussions? I thought she may have had amnesia or be brain dead or something...she woke up moments later and was FINE! It seemed a little far-fetched to me!

From A Medical Point Of View....it is possible to come out like she did...if you would research it and the temp of the water in Seattle is usually around 40 degrees.....an actual person would be able to survive 1-3 hours in this water...with little to no brain damage...so yes this is possible

I totally agree with you. I am in complete love with the show, but I think that she should have had something wrong with her. At least something minimal or SOMETHING. Like, maybe she has to rehabilitate herself back or she should have been in a coma for awhile.
The problem with the storyline was that it shouldn't have been Meredith that fell in the water. If it was any other character, there would have been some sort of doubts in our minds that they might not survive. Since it was Meredith, we all knew that nothing would happen to her. Unless they were planning on ending the show, she was going to survive. But killing off another intern or resident wouldn't have been such a rash idea (even though I love them all and hope they don't!). Writers at some point decided to kill someone off, and since it is Season 3 already, it could have been time.

I agree with everyone else on whether it is possible, it is, but; you are assuming things you have no idea about. She may have problems they have not as yet discovered. Think about it, she had Bypass Surgery. She is not getting out of that hospital until they have tortured her for three more days to see that she has no organ failure or brain damage. She may have both. You never know. I mean, it is not like she jumped out of bed and started to treat people. I am guessing she is on a bed pan with a catheter and an IV. I also think sex is out of the question for some times to come as her chest heals from the procedures. But if she couldn't talk you would have thought she has to be dead still. It is time to move forward and heal.

Yes because her core body temper was well below normal, which in turn "froze her organs". And as we all know when you freeze something you are in essence preserving it. The cold body temp preserved her organs. Being that she was "frozen" due to water, means this was a "quick freeze" which gave her organs a better chance at being preserved with little or no damege. Your body can not function or do its job when not at the correct temp. Being "frozen" the drugs, CPR and Defibrillation had no effect on her system. Once her core temp returned to a level in which her body could function and work toward homestasis again, the recusitation efforts actually had a chance to have some effect. It is very far-fetched and very unlikely, but TECHNICALLY it could happen

Yes yes and that is why its a night time drama series! There was no way they were gonna kill Mer off. Do you know how many people would have stopped watching, and How many more viewers they got because of this epidsodes. This episode was amazing!

What happened to her is possible. I always hear the saying "you aren't dead until you're warm and dead"....which means she could still come back after appearing dead. She was hypothermic and all her blood was rushing toward the core of her body to keep her heart warm and alive. As she warmed up she was able to come back to life.

well it was hard to tell how many minutes actually transpired, cuz her unconscious period started one week and then continued til 2/22 and deep into the show. we cannot calculate the number of minutes. if they really wanted to give us another cliffhanger they should have not let us know she could talk, and make us wait more weeks to see if she is gonna be normal and not brain damaged

There is a possiblility that this was nothing but screened television.

But there are such things as medical miracles, they do happen, and as far fetched as it seems, what happened tonight was possible.
