Like, while they're typing or texting

It boggles the mind doesn't it? They don't seem to be able to spell, or know how to click that button labeled "spell check". Or maybe a better question is how all of the rest of us were able to spell correctly in an era without automated spell checkers. (All we had was that dictionary. And if you wanted to look something up, you had to get it down off the shelf, and it weighed 40 pounds!)

Well, some kids think that it sounds cooler when you type out cute like ky00t or something. Also, it's kind of a culture trend. By everyone else doing it, you have to join in too, you know?

Watch. The kids will get tired of always trying to decode everyone's messages, then the trend will go backwards, where everyone else will start typing normally again.

But as for texting, it's easier to type quickly if everything is shorter.

Companies do it all the time, too. Think about it. It's an effective marketing ploy because laziness is an inherent part of our culture now. That's probably what makes it so attractive to us kids. But it's also nice to have a type of shorthand everyone understands.

I've heard tell that the US educational system has strayed far from the original mission of giving its students a thorough grounding in the basics of the English language.
A mere 28 years ago, my "reading" and "english" classes drilled my classmates and I relentlessly in the building blocks of sentences. Correct spelling and pronunciation were emphasized.
Does anyone emerging from public schools know how to diagram a sentence? What a dipthong or schwa are?
I seriously doubt it. Schools have to return to the basics, or else we're breeding a generation of semiliterates.

They spell everythign wrong because of instant messaging and emails. On the computer all they type is with lol or they spell because cuz or somethign like that. Its just because they dont spell everythign out on the computer so they are putting it into their daily lives. Its becoming like a habit when we write anythign now.

I'm not a kid but I abbreviate when I'm texting. But that is the only time. Sometimes I can't understand what the word is they are saying because it's abbreviated so much.

I suppose they do it becasue to them it seems, cool, or easier.... The sad thing is that I'm sure many of them are now handing in the school projects in a format similar to they way they text and email. The english language will be lost to laziness.

because it's faster to use shortcuts. i think its annoying when people go out of their way to spell things wrong though.. sometimes they arent even shortcuts and its so annoying. like when people say "dat" instead of that.. thats just so annoying. things like "u", "brb" "ttyl" "2day" are understandable. but when u tYpE lyKe tHiS and spell things wrong w/ the same amount or more letters.. i think they are just being ignorant!!

Partially because they can, and because of laziness, and because the educational system is getting worse instead of better.
