I think there are 2 kinds of people involved. First, a software programmer/engineer who creates the virus, and then the "hacker" who distributes it. I recently read about how hackers find security leaks by studying the fixes that Microsoft and and others come up with, and exploiting them before people get the chance to use the fixes. This makes a good case for why we should always try to keep updated daily for the latest security fixes and virus definitions to our OS and anti virus programs.

No one really knows the awnser to this one

The blame falls mostly on bad software writers who leave exploits hackers can use

The internet as a whole can provably implement ways to protect people but it would require censoring and it would create a red scare like with communism where anyone could get a site shutdown because they harbor hackers

so at the end of the day it falls on the end user not to fall for scams and things that will lead them to viruses and spyware

Some are no doubt people who have had high level jobs in
the computer world and got fired. However the vast majority
come from different parts of the globe and simply travel through
e-mails that get passed along.

Well, first of all , they are hidden viruses in websites, and if you havent checked....there are millions, perhaps billions of websites out there.

Not to mention the links to each website, even if the goverment did stop those websites, more would eventually sprout out for each one put down....

Its kind of like the AIDS/HIV virus, even if you do find the cure, the virus eventually mutates into something more powerful and harder to combat.

Your idea that legitimate anti-malware vendors (Norton, Kaspersky, AVG, McAfee, etc) produce viruses and other malware to create customers for there products in one of the oldest "urban legends" in existence. An old "wives-tale" if you will!

I suppose that you also believe that Doctors create diseases so they can charge people to cure them?

I suppose that you also believe that Tow Truck Drivers create car accidents so that they can charge people to tow the wreak away?

I suppose that you also believe that Fire Fighters light buildings on fire in order to "promote business"?

It's all about making money. Perhaps Eugene Kaspersky, founder of anti-virus maker Kaspersky Labs said it best, " It's a different world today. 10 years ago, we were fighting against smart kids who hacked as a hobby. Now, we're dealing with criminal gangs that control your computer to make money. Different world, different protections."

I don't think they are releated to the anti virus companies....most of the guys are just hackers that have nothing better to do.
