I am a college flute major. All I can say is do not go for cheap. All that leads to is more money being spent in the long run. Meaning taking it to shop because the pads wear down or fall out faster, the springs break easier and the intonation and tone quality are horrendous. Also cheap means off brand and off brands means most music stores can't repair the instrument due to the fact that most off brand makers don't use the same parts as other makers. If you get a flute tell your parents that you should start on a better than cheap instrument for the long run. I suggest Armstrong, they usually run brand new starting around 500-750. Also you can buy used for 200 up. Sometimes the schools will have extras for those that cant afford to buy new. Most music stores also do have monthly rental plans. I know that the stores around me do flutes for 26 dollars a month for a certain amount of time, but payments can be paid larger if wanted. But if you get a flute look into armstrong, germignheirt, and yamaha. stay away from beginning selmer and walmart. Selmer has good professional flutes but that is not what you need as a beginning. Also if possible check into an open hole armstrong intermediate. can use as a student and up. That is what I use. The tone is great, intonation is rarely off and they aren't that much. good luck in finding a flute

Flute World is your best bet. I can guarantee you that you will not find a good intermediate flute for under $1,000. But I don't see a problem with getting a used flute. As long as it is kept right it should be fine. I would also stick with Yamaha. They last longer than other brands.

Sam's Club sometimes sells them. I think they were less than $200. Amazon.com has musical instruments too - alot of them are less than $100. I wouldn't waste my money on cheap flutes though. It's all about quality. Yamaha probably has one of the best beginner flutes. You try looking for one at a pawn shop or ebay.

ebay. My mother in law just sold one for $40.00. It's a shame I didn't see this sooner. Pawn shops are also good places to find cheap instruments. Just make sure you clean a used one really well.

your local music store will prolly rent you one for not that much. thats how i did it. in the end i bought the flute cus i was comfortable with it. but not too cheap. just a student flute will be fine. my flutes brand was armstrong, and its held up really well. but i took really good care of it. so good luck.
ps: do not do ebay!!

At the school I went to the company where they ordered them, offers a monthly paying choice. You could also check out local pawn shops.
