I would highly recommend "The Prestige." It didn't come out this year, it's already on DVD, but I'd suggest renting it. It actually turned out to be one of the best movies I've ever seen and I watch movies on a pretty regular basis. Even if you're not into magic, Christian Bale or movies based in the late 1800's, just the concept and execution of this movie was brilliant. Go. Now. Why are you still reading this?!

I would say Babel only because I don't think it did so well at the box office. The critics seem to have noticed though. I think it was an amazing movie...........very much a deep thought provoking movie. I think I need to see it again in order to pick up on a lot of the nuances and passive messages.

Only thing I saw that suprised me, was Idiocracy. Its on DVD. Its done by Mike Judge (office space, Beavis and Butthead). Its not great but its funnier than I expected.
