Water is not bad for your baby! The only fear people have with water is that the baby will fill up on water and than eat less, causing a slower growth. This does not happen with most babies. Some doctors actually advise to give water to those babies who seem to be slightly constipated all the time. the water acts as a stool-softener and is actually a big help! better than inserting things like suppositories or a thermometer.

conclusion - don't worry about it! water is fine at any age. just boil it if its not filtered!

You can give them water when they are pretty young but there is really no need to usually and you do not want to give them water instead of nursing/formula. That could fill them Up.
I was recommend to give my son water when he was 3 months old though because, even though he was only nursed, he was getting constipated. The additional water helped a TON!
I personally used bottled water to avoid the chlorine and other chemicals in the water.

When he's over a year old. Babies under a year get ALL their fluid needs from breastmilk or formula and DO NOT NEED water. (Or juice.) There's no need for it. Babies have small stomachs that tend to fill easily, and if they're full from water, they're not going to want to take their feedings. If they refuse their feedings, they're not getting what they need nutritionally, and therefore don't grow and develop properly.

Incidentally - water for constipation? No. THEN you can give a small amount of juice (prune, pear, apple, grape, or cherry.) and no more than one ounce per month of child's age and no more than twice a day. That's to treat a symptom.

Infants need only breast milk or formula for the first few months of life. That is very important. There is enough "water" in both of those and nothing additional is needed. Ask your pediatrician for advice if your baby still seems thirsty after 24 ounces of liquid a day. Babies do tend to be overfed when a bottle is popped into their mouths every time they squawk! They get conditioned to getting fed when they cry---but a little crying and soothing never hurt any of them.

Don't give it at birth!! Their kidneys are not developed enough to handle water. If you must give water (breast fed babies do NOT need, but formula fed may need it depending on baby) add a little spoon of sugar to the water. It not only makes it easier on their kidneys but also helps it stay with them longer.

My doc said at 8 - 10 weeks I could give water. He asked me to at least wait until 8 weeks. If your unsure you can always call your doctor's office and ask one of the nurses.

I started giving my son a sippy after feedings at 3 1/2 months. He also started cereal then and I felt he needed it more then.

From birth is fine, but it isn't necessary unless he is constipated. My daughter's doctor did have me start giving my daughter at little bit of water at 2 weeks old because she was a little constipated.

A little water is fine from birth and can help if he gets constipated.Don't give too much though because it will fill his little tummy and he won't want his dinner!

3 months is ok but make sure it's distilled.
The sooner you begin him on water the easier he will adapt to it.
