Is there a real reason? A friend asked me this question and now it's bugging me too, so if anyone knows, I'd appreciate an answer. Thanks!

It's simply a categorization to refer to numbers that are evenly divisible by 2 and those that are not. Categorizing helps in all sciences, including mathematics. Humans are always looking for what makes things similar and what makes things different. Odd and even numbers are merely a result of that tendency.

this might not be exactly right.... but here

Ancient Chinese regarded odd numbers as being masculine and even numbers as being feminine. "Nine", which is the largest single digit number was taken to mean the "ultimate masculine" and was, therefore, symbolic of the supreme sovereignty of the emperor.

also, even numbers were named first, and the remaining ones, which weren't even were called "odd" hence the meaning of odd being different......
