I’m not a huge soccer fan but did watch as much of the world Cup last year as I could with some interest. I was wondering why there isn’t a situation where the top team in the English Premier league doesn’t pay the best team in the Spanish or German league in a playoff to have just one champion of Europe? Kind of a scenario that matches Real Madrid vs Manchester United.
Maybe they have played in the past in an exhibition or “friendly” game but to me, this would create a “super bowl” type game that would be HUGE!
If I am wrong and this is the current format for the playoffs, please excuse my ignorance and let me know when they play because I will love to follow the sport more (it’s beats Nascar)

every country has it's own league(s). some like England, Spain, Italy need to more than one league, they are minor leagues. this way smaller cities can also have a team, that doesn't necessarily play against the big teams, except for cups like the FA Cup or King's cup. This varies by country. UEFA has the Champions league for the top 3 or 4 teams for england, spain, italy, germany, and top team for smaller countries. They are crowned the champ of europe. uefa also has the uefa cup for smaller teams. South america has the copa libertadores which the same as the champions in europe, they favor argentina and brazil. champions, uefa, and libertadores all run as long as a regular season, but have more days off because of scheduling.

They do do that. There is the Champions League for the best clubs in Europe and the UEFA Cup, which is a level below that, which is also for clubs in Europe. Then of course each country has their own domestic league, for example, the English Premier League in England. Where a club places in their domestic league determines which competition they are able to enter into (between Champions League and UEFA Cup). For national teams, the biggest in Europe are the Euro Cup and the World Cup (WC is for all other qualifying nations as well). So, there are a lot of competitions, and even a lot more, but after awhile you will learn more about them and soon be able to tell them all apart and how they all work. Glad to have some new interests! Enjoy the game :)

They do in the World Cup Club. As it's name suggests, the top clubs in the world play against each other. Just last year, Internacional (Brazil) won against Barcelona (Spain) 1-0.
