Try to get them to do things that they truly enjoy and are good at. This will definitely help them feel better about themselves. They'll be having a good time and meet like minded people who'll probably become friends.
Just being a good friend such as yourself can also work wonders!

pay attention to what matters most to that person and compliment them on those areas. but be sincere, becuase people with low self esteem will prolly be able to tell if you are or not.

face them to other people,teach them how to commnunicate others especially those people who are close to his heart...it is just simple...dont shy and have a confident to do everything you want..yes it is unavoidable to feel shy but i know that you can control it..just beleive in yourself...be confident
