A mouse or something probably died under your house or (worse) between your walls. Did you put rat poison out? It's better to use traps. I guess you could set off a bug bomb and leave for 4 hours. That's what I would do if I couldn't find the culprit.

First thing to do is to become a detective and find the source of what is attracting the flies. Flies are most attracted by a) animal waste, b) decaying flesh, and c) biodegradable trash. It could be a real problem if there is maybe a dead mouse or something in the attic or trapped in the walls. See if you can figure out where the flies are found the most for clues.

Second thing to do is more detective work, check windows and doors for gaps, broken screens, caulking or weather stripping that needs to be replaced.

Next, get rid of the flies. The most effective weapon is still a fly swatter, but there are plenty of other products out there.

One popular trick that many people swear by is to hang zip lock plastic bags half full of water over doorways or in sunlight. There is something about the refractive light in the water that disturbs the flies vision - or that's the theory anyway.

You can also use citronella candles, bug sprays, fly strips and many other products.

Flies are like cockroaches: they come from everywhere, and you can't get rid of them all. All you can do is make your environment unfriendly to them. Make it hard for them to get into your house, and don’t leave out any food or drink that they can smell and come after.

Start with prevention. Make sure your screens have no holes. If they do, patch them or get new screens. Make sure you don't have food sitting out. In the fraction of a second it takes for a fly to land on your food, it deposits germs from whatever other things it sat on before -- and you know what that could be! Yecch!

There are smells that flies don’t like. Make pomanders and hang them around your doors and windows. They can contain either citrus, pine oil, lavender, cloves or eucalyptus. You’ll like the smell too! The pomanders don’t kill the flies; they just create an atmosphere that flies find disgusting, so they’ll go somewhere else.

If you have a garden, grow some fleabane or tansy outside. I have seen these being sold on eBay. Basil is another good fly-repelling garden plant -- plus you can use it in cooking! Same goes for mint, lemongrass, and lemon balm! These plants need lots of light. If you don’t have a garden, put them in bright light, like on an open windowsill, but not right next to glass on a closed windowsill.

To get flies out of the house, try turning off the lights and then shooing them through an open door. They do not like darkness, and will go to the light to get out, so as to go back to their constant business of finding food.

Consider putting up a birdhouse or houses, and don't use insecticides. Birds love eating flies. But they will get sick if they swallow any sprayed flies. Otherwise, they will keep the flies in check.

If you're not afraid of praying mantises, they will also help by eating the flies. You can buy an egg case online or at home-and-garden stores, put it in your garden and watch the little cuties hatch.

Well, as long as I'm talking about creeping creatures, I might as well mention that spiders love flies, so leave at least the outdoor webs alone and get some free help from them. They are not interested in leaving their webs to bother you; they are really prisoners there if you think about it.

Hope that helps!

your problem is so simpl, its almost beneath us. get a mayo jar, wash it, poke several holes in the lid. next, bait the trap-almost anything that will rot will work-raw fish raw ground beef. place the lid back on and set your trap somewhere where it wont be bothered. at the beginning of fly season you really should place this trap outside. anyway here is what happens: flies are attracted to the bait and the enter the jar thru the holes in the lid. guess what? flies are retarded because they cannot figure out how to escape. as the flies die off in the jar they become more bait. I swear to God this works and its cheap. I have seen factory made traps just like the one i described that sell for aroun 8 dollars. a word of caution DONT OPEN THE LID just throw it away and start another.

Something, perhaps a mouse/mice or squirrel has probably died somewhere in the house, even in the wall or ceiling. That or there is some hidden garbage somewhere, from a pet or child maybe dragging it there.

Probably the location of the trash. I would see about moving it to another place away from the door if possible. Otherwise there may be something attracting them. Find it and remove it.

THEY MULTIPLY BY THE MILLIONS! I HAVE FOUND THE BEST AND EASIEST WAY TO RID THE HOUSE OF THEM IS RAID FLYING INSECT SPRAY. YOU MAY HAVE TO USE IT A FEW TIMES TO GET RID OF THEM COMPLETELY. THEN KEEP YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS CLOSED! IT COULD JUST BE THAT THEY ARE COMING IN NOW THAT THEY ARE OUT WITH THE WARMER WEATHER. GOOD LUCK!
