If someone could give me some helpful advice(fixes my problem) I will send you $20.Here's the rundown. I have dial-up internet.I use Mozilla Firefox. My internet used to be kinda fast(for dial-up), but in the past week or two, it has become much slower. Certain websites will just "time-out" when i try to get on them. One instance/day these websites work another time/day they won't. I do defrag, diskcleanup, delete cookies, delete temporary files on a regular basis. My phone line is still plugged in.And my computer says I'm connected. My homepage always comes up just fine, but any website i goto after that is inconsistent as far as opening.I have a Zonealarm firewall & AVG antivirus free edition. if you need anymore details e-mail me at foofightin1341@owensboro.net. and if you help me get this internet back to normal, then i will send you $20.

also, sometimes my AIM will connect and sometimes it says it can't be reached. I was just on it about 20 minutes ago, then got off the internet and got back on the internet, and now it can't connect.

I'm going to go a totally different route than everyone else in answering this question. I'm not 100% sure of the answer, but I'm not going to continue saying that it's spyware/adware/virus because that's not the only reason that PCs go slow. People say it because it's the low hanging fruit that people throw out there all of the time just because it CAN cause this...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you might want to get your telephone line checked for line quality. It's free to have the line check done, as long as they don't have to check inside your residence. I don't know where you live, but I say this for several reasons:
1) It's winter right now in the northern hemisphere and it's possible that the snow and ice has caused some problems with your line
2) It's been within the past few weeks.
3) I hate the "it's a virus" wolf crying every time someone has a computer problem that they can't reason out.
4) I like to be right and if I think that everyone else has the right answer, I'm not going to doubly confirm what someone else said...
5) I don't want your money, and I'm sure that's appealing :)

You can contact your telephone company and they can run a test on it. A good indication that it could be your line is if you can hear noise (static) on the line when you're talking on the telephone.

Good luck resolving the problem. Hopefully it's something simple. And remember, if you don't log on with a user with Administrative rights to do normal usage, you won't have to fear the worst when someone screams "You're infected with a nasty virus" anymore.

Sincerely,
Don

First Thing - AVG And ZA conflict with each other, they fight back and forth all the time, Switch the AntiVirus to Avast it is excellent and free, I use it.. and then also When using Firefox, alot of people don't realize is Firefox can and will consume anywhere from 40 to 180 MB's of Memory while running, Trust Me, I know - I love firefox but use IE and Opera, they use less memory than firefox combined together, lose firefox and use IE or Opera. Your problems will disappear.. Good luck

When the computer is slow do control+alt+del and you will see all the processes which are running. Write them down and close each one of them at a time. Then see if the situation improved. If not reboot and do the same thing, only now close another process. This is how you will find which process is the culprit, and make sure not to use it again (using the same method - start and then control+alt+del and then end the process (=task).
As a final step email to me at speedlimit@att.net and I will tell you where to send the check to.

Simply back-up all your stuff and format your machine especially if that is a laptop. I bet you can try everything that has been suggested and i can assure you that it wont solve your problem. I encountered the same problem a few years ago and i tried this and that and the only thing that solved it was FORMATTING MY COMPUTER. Thereafter I was very careful about programs I installed and I hv never encountered the same problem again. Try all the suggestions you have been given, research books, etc and if that fails implement my advice and if it works please send me my $20 as you have promised.

Try a registry cleaner. This will kill the programs that want to autaomtaclly startup on power on. Like AIM which will pop-up when the computer turns on.

Sounds like you got adware and/or spyware on your system.
If you're running XP with Service pack 2, go to www.windowsdefender.com
and install it.

Otherwise, try Spybot or Ad-Aware.
