I'm a saxophone player, and I would be a little better if I could breathe a little longer. No preesing matter, though, because I can breathe fine, but I just want that little edge to become my band's #1 alto sax.

My brother is an awesome trumpet player. He went around with his lips around an empty toilet paper roll. That works well to increase lung capacity and also stamina. He also tested himself with holding notes out as long as possible, as much over one minute as he could do. Doing this, and practicing a lot, he become the band's #1 player overall.

I tried the toilet paper roll thing. It kicked my butt, mostly because I was breathing a whole lot more than I was used to.

For myself, i did pool, no not the one with balls and a stick, the one with water and swim suits....swimming pool work.

You practice holding your breath while moving across the pool 25 m to the edge without coming up for air. Then you try to go 50m and then longer. Keep practicing.

Eventually your lung capacity expands. YOu can also do this by diving into deep water and staying under for long periods of time. If you are not an experienced swimmer do this under supervision.

Aerobic exercise is the best. Running is good but swimming is the best. Swimming, if you learn proper stroke technique, requires you to regulate your breathing during exercise. It strengthens your heart while working every major muscle group with little impact to your joints. See if your local YMCA has a stroke technique class, then practice every day if possible.

There are breathing exercises you can do. Try to work on holding your breath as long as you can, timing your self and work on it for a few weeks, every day increasing the time you can hold it.

I run up hills, that seems to help
