so i had to shut it down with the power button (5 second hold) and now the laptop will not start up - all I get is the light coming on that says I tried to start it.

That happens to me occasionally. I just unplug the power and disconnect the battery for a few seconds, the re-connect everything and re-start.

There is a software application or system driver that isn't unloading properly, so your system hangs. The best thing to do is run windows update and see if there are new system drivers you can implement. If this doesn't work try reinstalling some drivers manually from the vendors site. The most common are Video ( Nvidia, Ati, Via) or sound boards ie sound blasters, etc.. You can also use "Msconfig" command in the run box to temporarily load and unload drivers and startup apps.

If you are running Windows 98 - there is a bug fix for this concern. Check the Microsoft website.

If you are running a different OS - check for any bug fixes for your specific problem.

Normally, this concern doesn't affect the start up - other than to blame you for not shutting it down properly - and when its the computer's fault, that's aggravating!

If you can't get it started - try the recovery disk or cd.
