b/c me and my friend got these handheld things (organizers i belive) that can send a message to someone up to ten feet away...but she lives wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy farther than that and want to message her...is there any way you can change how far away you can recieve messages?

Only if it were possible to jack up the amplitude (assuming it's an RF device). But that could cost a bundle, possibly fry your communicator, and the FCC will be on you like a bun on a hamburger.

If it's infrared, the limitations of it cannot be overcome by anything.
