There are several things that may be going on here....
First most algae eaters are nocturnal, so you may have been seeing him just before he was settling in for the day.
Second, one of the most common reason algae eaters die is due to starvation. If your tank is clean, there may not be enough food to sustain him. I recommend getting the sinking algae disks at pet stores and feed him one or part of one (depending on his size) every other day. This way he is getting food to stay alive, but is still hungry to keep your tank clean.
Lastly, make sure your water quality is correct for him. PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, and Temperature.
Good luck!

Reptile guy has good info, but I wanted to add to his answer. Feed your algae-eaters right around the time you turn your lights off if you have other fish in the tank. Starvation is a major cause of death, but it can also be caused by feeding too early in the day and having the other fish eat the food intended for the algae eater! Since these are nocturnal fish, if you feed right before (or after) the lights go out, he can get most of the food.

By the sounds of it he's on his last legs, the problem might be that the environment has been compromised by changes in pH levels, checking Acid and Alkaline levels is a must! You could also be cleaning your tank to much

how long has he been in your tank? we have had a bad run with bristle nose suckers, live for 2 weeeks then all of a sudden dead on bottom of tank with guts either bloated or all sucked in n real skinny? run ammonia tests on water, and nitrate tests cant really say, had pet shop test my water n all levels were no better or worse than shops water so i am still puzzled! interested to know wat the cause of this is also.

While it's possible he's ailing, it's also possible he is just tired to be honest. Check your temperature and make sure it's not too low or too high and make sure your filter is running properly. That's really about all you can do without any other symptoms to go on.
