Generally, kids with low self-esteem join gangs, although in some urban areas, it is almost a survival mechanism to join. For the most part, gang members are those who don't have a lot going for them in terms of school and prospects, so gang life becomes a way to achieve identity. The key elements here are family life and school... if we can work out ways to improve these situations for the disenfranchised, we might make some headway in solving the gang problem... unfortunately, no one has come up with a good solution so far.

Give em good parents who spend quality time with them. Don't chuck your spouse because when I worked with youth gangs most of them said they were angry that they had only one overworked parent. Gangs are a family unit and will die for one another.
