Native Americans grew tobacco for religious purposes. It was grown in what is now Virginia and West Virginia. As far as the date, there is no concrete date.

I think Pocohanas's tribe was the first to introduce it to the Eourpean settlers and it became a major cash crop thanks to John Roalph who experimented with it until he found a tabacco that the colonists loved.
