years ago it was called a main idea i believe. It usually comes fairly early in your paper, but not always the first sentence. It can be more than one sentence also. It can be 3-5 sentences, or it can be an entire paragraph. it can also be the 3rd paragraph, but having it this far down in the paper is rare and should be left up to skilled writers. it is basically the "hook" for the paper. kind of like the chorus of a song. It describes the paper and gives the reader a taste of what the paper is about, but don't overdo it. The idea is to briefly identify what issue you are writing about and why, but not to go into too much detail. The details of the paper come after your thesis. The thesis describes the paper and gets the reader interested to read on, then you discuss the details, the meat of the paper with all your opinions and facts and junk. hope this helps.

A thesis statement, also called a thesis, is the main point that is to be discussed by an essay. Usually backed up by examples, the thesis statement is the theme of the whole piece. The thesis statement also provides the reader with a general idea of what the essay is going to be about. Thesis statements are very specific and to the point. This way the essay stays focused and narrow on the subject matter.

Generally, the thesis statement is introduced at the beginning of the piece describing the topic and how the writer is going to analyze the information on that topic. The topic is also summarized at the end, giving the reader, and essay, closure.

In university or high school writing, a thesis will typically contain multiple paragraphs. So will an essay, although it's possible for an essay to consist of one lengthy paragraph (see topic sentence). For example, "In the early 1970s, a rock group named The Ramones captured the fancy of a generation of young people who mimicked the tattered fashion and punk attitude of these genuinely talented musicians, boosting them to fame."

There is also a concluding statement that has to flow with the thesis statement. Do not forget to use your thesis as a supporting sentence in your conclusion.

a thesis statement:
takes on a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree
deals with a subject that can be adequately treated given the nature of the assignment
expresses one main idea
asserts your conclusions about a subject

an example would be: Hunger persists in Appalachia because jobs are scarce and farming in the infertile soil is rarely profitable.

Its a statement of the question the thesis is posing. You usually state a hypothesis, a proposed explanation of some facts. Then you briefly say how that hypothesis is going to be tested.

a thesis is basically your main idea, which you are trying to describe/persuade around.

ex.

"Dogs make the ultimate pet a person can ever have"

its almost like a topic sentence, only you can use this to base your entire speech around.

good luck!

i think ur thesis can even be a question in certain cases....but not many. i think
