FYI I'm bi. I hear it being used all the time in my school hallways out of context and It really bugs the crap out of me. Like they would use it such a way like "oh man your mp3 player looks so gay" that type of thing really gets on my nerves. Am I the only one who feels this way?

What I mean by out of context is that the word is not used properly in a sentance for its actual meaning "liking some one of the same sex" or "happy". and they use it in a way that it is not related to either of these meanings.

OH MY GOD, YES!! in school i hear that all the time. i'm straight an it bothers me! i'm totally pro-gay rights, and i get called a lesbian all the time, too. in one class in particular, i hear a boy say the word "gay" or "f*ggot" about everyother word. i got so fed up with it one time, that i yelled at him, "Go find a thesaurus you homophobic, moron! and learn some new words to put in your vocabulary!!!"

but then he just called me a lesbo. so... you are not alone at all i wish they would stop, but it will take a lot of work.

go to dayofsilence.org to learn about a national event to stop harrassment in your school. me and my friends organized it last year at my school and it was a lot of fun.

It doesn't bother me,unless someone is being hateful towards gay people. I actually say it in sentences all the time, not meaning anything offensive. Like "That looks so gay"or Man,your freakin gay-like saying their stupid or something. It's just how I talk. Nobody takes offence, even the people who are gay that i say it around. People need to quit taking things so seriously and loosen up sometimes.

YES YES YES. There was a time when one of my brothers moved back home and EVERYTHING was "so gay". "Spiderman's voice is SO gay" was one thing he said. It killed me. I know I am not the only one this bothers as a comedian on StarSearch mentioned it and won. I personally do not approve of homosexuality but even if I did it would still drive me nuts that you can't be friends with another guy or not be after every girl without SOMEONE saying THAT IS SO GAY.

I don't hear it out of context at my university but when I walk around a store I hear little punks talk like that and I do get bugged. However, I feel better when I look and them and they're already getting a bald spot and weigh more than a freight train. :0)

I don't like that the word is being used to describe something negative. Like "it's so gay" I hear it in movies and on tv. I have a problem with spreading any more hate and intolerance.

Yes, but if I say something, everyone'll think I'm gay (though I'm bi), and I'm not completely out of the closet yet... However, it does get annoying for people to make the sad jokes that are always based on stereotypes...

They are inferring that the mp3 player looks corny, or feminine, or confused like they believe someone who is gay looks. They aren't using it out of context. They are using it according to their perspective of "gay".

Gay doesn't even refer to sodomites. It is a misnomer. I will fill you in on some history - like several thousand years worth. Sorry to inform you but the proper context is "1 a : happily excited : MERRY b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits
2 a : BRIGHT, LIVELY b : brilliant in color" before it was perverted in the English language. Now it also means"3 : given to social pleasures; also : LICENTIOUS"(1)
and homosexual.

"licentious -Disregarding moral laws regarding sex." (2)
[more historical facts]
"Deuteronomy 23:17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a SODOMITE of the sons of Israel. KJV"
"1 Kings 14:24 And there were also SODOMITES in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. KJV"
"1 Kings 15:12 And he took away the SODOMITES out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. KJV"
"1 Kings 22:46 And the remnant of the SODOMITES, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land. KJV"
"2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the SODOMITES, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove. KJV"

"Why is this important? A couple of reasons.

Ever heard of "SODOMY Laws"? It was illegal in the U.S. to be a SODOMITE (now people call 'em homosexuals); hence SODOMY laws. In a generation or two, people, including Christians who read the NIV, won't know where the word SODOMITE came from.
This change from SODOMITE to "shrine prostitute" tells us that homosexuality isn't bad, there are just some homosexuals doing bad things. This sentiment has been expressed by a number of pro-SODOMITE individuals who claim Christ. They are deciving themselves for the scripture says the effeminate and abusers of themselves with mankind won't inherit the kingdom of heaven.
This NIV revelation makes me want to use the word "SODOMITE" all the time! I plan to use it in place of the nicer sounding "homosexual". The SODOMITES were ..... destroyed by God for their wicked practices. Men with men working that which is unseemly--receiving in themselves the recompence of their error which was meet. Read more about SODOMITES Mollenkott and Woudstra here. [NOTE; A sodmite and sodomitess were on the board of the NIV per this article.]

.....Yet some professing Christian will write me quoting NIV scholars and complaining that the KJV is full of errors! We know what happens when the blind lead the blind--both shall fall into the ditch!" (3)

And what exactly is out of context? Being that gay originally meant happy or ecstatic. So I would wager that our whole societies use of the word gay would be out of context of the original meaning of the word, but as with all things meanings and ideas placed with words change with society.

For the most part, no. But, for the record, I actually rarely (if ever) use it out of context.
